Introduction
Our previous blog shared the feedback received on the draft open brief revisions.
This blog updates on progress relating to the design of the 1190 Memorial Space.
Spatial design principles
The council’s team have revised the spatial specification for the 1190 Memorial Space to deliver a larger area that provides sufficient seating and standing space to meet the revised Open Brief.
| Area size (approx.) | Seating capacity (approx.) | Standing and seating capacity (approx.) | |
| Approved planning permission (December 2025) | 39 m2 | 9.2m of benches
= 18 people |
52 people |
| Revised specifications
(March 2026) |
80 m2 | 18.6m of benches = 37 people | 102 people |
Next steps
The design team will now develop a detailed design based on the revised open brief, including interpretation and detailing which is visibly Jewish.
It is anticipated that creating a larger space should be acceptable for a “non-material amendment” to the planning approval. This will need to checked with the Local Planning Authority once we have a detailed that we are all happy with.
Alongside the design work for the 1190 memorial space, in the coming weeks there will be some further work on how to articulate the importance of 1190 within the other historic narratives in the area, including how connections to interfaith collaboration, peace and human rights might be made.
